On Tuesday, February 10, the Carbondale Terriers boys basketball team had a rivalry face off against the Murphysboro Red Devils at Carbondale Community High School. The pregame warmups were full of excitement, along with a little dancing.
The Red Devils started with control of the ball, but the Terriers fought hard and stayed in the fight. Great defensive plays kept the Terriers hopes alive, allowing them to have more possession of the ball. There were also halftime activities that got the crowd very involved.
CCHS Sophomore basketball player Will Lehman says “I’m not too familiar with the history, but Murphy and Carbondale have been rivals for a really long time. I know my mom’s friends say that Murphy was their biggest rival in school. But ever since I’ve been here, it’s really been the Jackson County Cup rivalry is what really makes it a big rivalry.” Lehman also says “Fans definitely make a difference. Especially for momentum. And I feel like our fans did a great job in the Murphy game and that’s a big reason why we won.”
The Terriers ended with a 48-39 victory over the Red Devils.
