Carbondale community high school offers many different PE classes. Personal fitness, adventure ed, strength training, freshman P.E, team sports. Haley Karayiannis is the only teacher for personal fitness. Monday is mindful Monday, which consists of yoga and Pilates. Tuesdays are Tobata which are more focused on getting your heart rate up, these days you are typically doing kickboxing, boxing, timed workouts. Wednesdays are normal cardio days with the heart rate monitor.
Normally you can choose to do whatever you want as long as your heart rate is up. Thursdays are in the weight room getting fit lifting weights. And Fridays are also another cardio day. The goal of personal fitness is when the students who walk out of here have some sort of knowledge of fitness they can use in life.
“So personal fitness is a glimpse into working out, so the kids who come in here are maybe not being exposed to a different type of exercise and activity. So, with personal fitness I give them an idea of what’s out there in the world. We dabble in everything from kickboxing, lifting weights, yoga, Pilates, bar classes, step aerobatics, tennis, lifelong games. We as teachers are learning alongside them so we can present the best information for them so they can learn from it.”
