Typical writing classes in high school don’t always click with most students. Harley Obaid is one of those students who didn’t enjoy traditional English classes. She took Journalism originally because she was tired of all the other English classes and hated all the excessive writing and even though she loves to read, she wasn’t enjoying what they were reading in class.
Her favorite assignment/article that she’s written so far is her second article for E-Sports. Her main reasoning for this is because she is not only a part of the club/team it is easier to find contacts to interview because knows her contacts.
Obaid feels she tends to hyperfixate on things that are new to her life or things that bring her even the slightest bit of joy. That is one of many reasons for her being a part of many clubs that revolve around her interests, such as Table Top Gaming and E-sports. One of her main fixations at the moment are games on her Nintendo Switch such as Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom & Breath of Wild.
Journalism is a class that requires you to step outside of your comfort zone in many ways. For starters you need to learn how to write in a less traditional way than she’s been taught in her other English classes. Obaid also has been pushed to be more social in order to conduct interviews with her contacts. Obaid’s only challenge in this class is finding story ideas and starting the writing process.
“I kind of have a bad writer’s block but once I get into it, it’s not too hard”. Obaid said
This class has brought her a bit out of her shell and improved some of skills and expanded her knowledge. An example of this is she has learned what makes a good picture and learned how to use a more professional camera other than her phone camera. Given this information she does not see herself using these journalism skills in the future.
“Not in a career aspect but more of a hobby Point of View”. Obaid said
