Chef’s Choice: How to make Chicken Dogs

Dylan Self

WARNING: Making this dish is a large fire hazard. There is no guarantee that the dish will not catch flames during preparation. If this is worrisome, keep a bucket of water, or a fire extinguisher nearby.

The first step to making chicken dogs is to buy chicken breasts. Chicken breasts can be found at a local grocery store such as Wal-Mart or Schnucks. Make sure that the chicken breasts are not too big, but at the same time not too small so that when cut in half, they can fit inside of a hot dog bun.

Once the chicken breast is procured, place a breast on a cutting board and cut it in half. Using tongs is recommended while handling raw chicken, but if the reader chooses to handle the chicken with their bare hands, they must make sure to wash thoroughly with soap and water to reduce the risk of contracting salmonella.

Grab a cooking pan and put it on a stove top burner. Spray a slight amount of butter spray on the pan in order to prevent the breast from sticking to the pan. If too much butter spray is used, it will detract from the taste of the chicken, so it is crucial to use the right amount of butter spray. The next step is to remove the batteries from any smoke alarms that are in range of cooking. If cooked correctly, there will be lots of smoke coming out from the pan.

After removing any batteries in the smoke alarm, proceed to turn the stove on medium high heat, and let the pan get warm for about a minute. After a minute has elapsed place the two halves of the chicken breasts into the pan. Place a lid over the pan so that the steam will evenly cook the chicken, then set a timer for 5 to 6 minutes.

After 5 to 6 minutes have gone by, use a heat glove to remove the pan lid, and flip the chicken breast pieces to the other side with a spatula. The seared side of the chicken should now be facing upwards. The chicken may look burnt, but it is only lightly seared. The light sear on each side of the chicken helps give the chicken texture and crunch. Place the lid back over the pan, and let the chicken cook for an additional 5 to 6 minutes. This step is crucial so that each side of the chicken is cooked to perfection.

After the long wait is over, and both sides of the chicken are cooked to perfection, it is almost time to eat. Take one hot dog bun, and split it in half. Each half of the hot dog bun will hold one half of the chicken breast. Place the chicken inside the buns, and apply toppings generously. The chicken dog has the best taste when paired with ketchup and mustard. Now that the dish is prepared, put the batteries back in the smoke alarm, and enjoy!
