As of August 26, Governor Rauner signed a lunch bill stating that every school is to provide a meal to every student who needs one in the state of Illinois. NO student is to be denied for school lunch even if he/she doesn’t have the money. This law makes it possible for all students to be able to eat school lunch.

The new law is to battle lunch shaming, which occurs when students who can’t afford school lunch are turned away. The law states that if a student owes money for five or more lunches, the school can contact the student’s parent of guardian to collect the money owed. 

Here at CCHS the lunch shaming has not been an issue and Principal Thomas thinks that it’ll never be an issue. 

“Well, I think the new lunch law is important because it will not deny any student that cannot afford a lunch, a lunch or a breakfast,” Thomas said. “We have a thousand students in this building and if we need to feed a thousand students then we need to feed a thousand students and we do have great lunches and breakfast.”
