*Just because a song was ranked low does not mean I don’t like it.  “Baby I Don’t Know” is one of my favorite Vulf songs to play, however, it is one of the easiest.

Discussion of Each Song

  1. Sky Mall: I really didn’t want to put this at the top of the list, but I think it deserves it.  Obviously, the most difficult part is the ending when in speeds up. I am 100% that this was done in post-production, so that does knock it down some points, but it still is probably the hardest.  This also has to do with the fact that I suck at slap.
  2. Daddy, He Got a Tesla:  This song is hard. The time signatures are all out of the place in the intro and the solo is insane.
  3. It Gets Funkier IV: When you listen to this song you don’t realize how difficult it is.  Dart is playing tuned down a half step which does make some things easier but it does create some complications.  There are lots of very fast 16th note runs, and in the second A section its confusingly difficult to skip from the G string (tuned to Gb) back down to the E (tuned to Eb).  The solo is also very fast and difficult to improvise in. Good luck getting this down, you’re going to need it.
  4. Beastly: The third solo takes it up to #3.
  5. Dean Town: This song gets a bad rap due to the number of covers of it on YouTube, but there’s a reason why.  I still have yet to see a cover that really does this song justice. There is so much articulation on all of the notes in the main lick, the 16th notes require professional level stamina, and the fills during Woody’s solo will screw you up.  This song really does demonstrate everything a bass player needs to be good.
  6. 1 for 1, DiMaggio: This song is all around difficult but in particular its the transition between slapping and fingering the lick over the G chord at the end of the A section.
  7. Lost My Treble Long Ago: The complex variation of the bass lick is what really stands out on this track.  Listen to how he’s playing it at the beginning and then skip to the end. There is so much extra stuff that gradually gets added without the listener even noticing.  Also the fill he takes at the end up to the (high)2 D is super difficult to pull off.
  8. Conscious Club: I didn’t put the instrumental version on this list because the bass track isn’t any different.  Super challenging bass line if you really wanna get those ghost notes locked in. Listen to some live videos and you can really hear them.  Also, the fills during the 2nd time the intro section comes around.
  9. The Birdwatcher:  Extremely short articulation on the A section and some very difficult fills.  The live version is extremely different, however.
  10. A Walk to Remember: This song requires a really good sense of feel and the ability to solo well.  Also the fill at 2:00 is one of the greatest bass fills ever.
  11. Disco Ulysses (Instrumental): Playing that rhythm with the octaves is EXTREMELY difficult.  I gave up on employed a right-hand technique I came up with using my thumb. Such an amazing groove.
  12. Fugue State: It may not seem like it, but the fugue section is really hard. That lick towards the end is gnarly for your left hand.
  13. Darwin Derby: A very original groove that requires a lot of musicianship to truly lock in with the drums.  My cover of this song is very bad because I learned it at 5:30 am when the song leaked lol.
  14. Eddie Buzzsaw: This song is slightly faster than Vulf Pack.
  15. Vulf Pack: This song is very similar to Lost My Treble Long Ago.  Absolute jam. When he slides up to the Eb F Gb G it can be extremely easy to screw it up.
  16. Welcome to Vulf Records: The second bass fill.  Enough said. Also, the section at 1:03 is somewhat difficult to play.
  17. Business Casual: Joe plays A LOT of fills in this tune.  The last section at 2:40 is challenging too.
  18. Captain Hook: Say what you want about Baby Theo, but the instrumental track on this grooves hard.  The solo is also pretty decently difficult and requires a good knowledge of the entire fretboard.
  19. It Gets Funkier: Groove, groove, and groove.  This song is mostly jamming, so a strong knowledge of a difficult key is required (Eb Dorian).
  20. Adrienne & Adrianne: The solo on this is pretty difficult especially at the end.  It also requires a good sense of groove, especially during the 3rd A section.
  21. The Cup Stacker: The solo is difficult.  Also, you gotta love that Jr. P Bass tone.
  22. Cory Wong: It took me a long time until I learned this the correct way.  The A section is over F and Eb/F. It took me forever to realize that he’s playing low Fs pretty much the whole time.  This bass line is all about the bounce. The B section line is one of the most satisfying things in the world, and he plays some money fills during the C section.
  23. Lonely Town: With sections that are extremely similar to each other, it is very easy to get lost in this song.  Also, there are two licks that are particularly difficult in this song. I included a transcription of them in my bass cover of it on YouTube.
  24. 1612: It takes a lot of precision and restraint to play this song.  Once you learn those extra licks at the end it is damn near impossible to not do them at the beginning.  Also, the bridge is pretty difficult.
  25. Tomboy: The main challenge on this track stamina.  You never get a break during this song and there are so many opportunities to really screw up.
  26. It Gets Funkier III: The solo makes this pretty difficult to play.  Also, you have to play in Spanish, but that’s a whole other level.
  27. My First Car: The original is all groove.  You also need to have the musicality to drop down in complexity when other instruments become the focus.  Now if we were talking about the live version this would be up in the top 10.
  28. Margery, My First Car: This is just the same song without the first A and B section.
  29. It Gets Funkier II: This is a jam through and through.  This one also requires an incredible sense of groove.
  30. Animal Spirits: The chorus bass line is so much fun to play.  It’s also kinda difficult (gotta love the 4 finger stretch). The bridge is also pretty fast.
