If you asked someone to describe Gulbrandsen in three words they’d say loud, outgoing, and expressive. Which is no surprise when knowing what he’s involved in outside of school. He enjoys participating in theater shows as well as being a lifeguard at the Splash park over his summer break. He is also involved in the co-op program here at CCHS as a senior, which allows him to leave school in order to work at his job, Tres Hombres.
When working inside the classroom, Gulbrandsen says his biggest struggle is meeting deadlines and putting things off till last minute. However, he believes throughout the year he’s been able to improve and write for longer periods of time. Correlating with his struggles, he’s dealt with the effect of multiple different learning disabilities such as dyslexia.
Though he struggles with meeting deadlines and working in a timely manner, Gulbrandsen said he’s motivated just for the simple fact of getting a good grade.
“I’m just mainly motivated by getting a good grade and meeting those deadlines.” said Gulbrandsen
When asked why he chose to take journalism over a regular English class, he wasn’t interested in taking a traditional class and wanted to try something new. Gulbrandsen also plans on majoring in radio media along with journalism, these classes in high school will prepare him for his upcoming college year.
“Theres skills from this class that I’ll be able to use with my major since it’s all mainly involving journalism.” said Gulbrandsen
Although Gulbrandsen seems to face certain challenges when in the newsroom, he continues to grow as a writer. His outgoing personality and drive to make things happen on time reflects his determination to improve throughout the year. As he goes onto college later next year his gained skills this year will serve him well as he enters the media field.
