Learn, Lead, Serve. That is the motto for the SIU Honors program. SIU has an honors program that helps students achieve great things. You can join honors at any time, and it’s not only focused on grades, the content of the person matters too.
Honors is a program that is designed to help you learn what you want to how you want to.
Paula Horton is a non-traditional honors student at SIU, her majors are psychology and communication studies, and she has a social justice minor. She highlights how unique the honors program is compared to the normal college experience.
“It makes your university experience kind of like a sandbox game, because you get to customize nearly everything you do because of honors” said Horton.
Horton also compares highschool and SIU honors. In honors, you get to have classes with a lot of the same people, making it easier to make friends. She also mentions a huge bonus being the honors lounge, which has many functions. It’s good for studies, dozing between classes, meeting other students for various reasons, and the honors advisors have their offices there.

Brenda Sanders is one of the honors advisors for SIU. Sanders states that honors is for everyone, and it may have requirements but it isn’t too strict with them.
David Milley is another honors advisor for SIU. Milley mentions that honors helps your application look good and helps you get into graduate school, it also helps with your career path in general, whatever that may be.
Elizabeth Donoghue is also an honors advisor for SIU.
“I feel like it [honors] means home in a way” said Donoghue.
Donoghue states that, even if you don’t think you’re honors material, you should still apply.
