The Adventure Education PE program at CCHS takes a different approach to physical education by using outdoor and adventure-based activities to help students grow both physically and socially. To get a better sense of what the class is all about, I spoke with the instructor, Coach Hankey, who explained that each activity is chosen with a purpose in mind.
“Some things we do, for example, are rock climbing,” Hankey said. “It works on flexibility, endurance, and strength—all of the core things that help make a healthy individual.”
He noted that the course pushes students in ways traditional PE classes usually don’t.
I also interviewed senior Alyssa Daniels, who took Adventure Ed in a previous year. She described it as one of the most enjoyable PE classes she’s taken.
“Mr. Hankey is a very nice and respectable teacher,” Daniels said. “I had fun in the class because the activities we did weren’t boring.”
When asked by me why he chose to teach the course, Hankey said the activities are ones he grew up doing himself.
“Rollerblading, geocaching, rock climbing, is something I did that I thought was fun”.
Because those experiences were such a big part of his childhood, he now enjoys sharing them with his students.
I strongly encourage the freshman that don’t know which P.E to pick a student that wants to do pleasurable activities for your school year, adventures Ed P.E is the diverse P.E for you
