Carbondale Community High School has many athletic programs that go year round, but none of them would be able to do the things they do without the donations that support them. There are many people and businesses that support many different athletic programs within the school.
Gwen Poore, Athletic Director at CCHS, says there are many different ways to donate. Most donations come from individual sports fundraising for themselves, which allows them to spend that money on anything they may want/need without approval from the Athletic Department. However, each program’s coach can also go out and fundraise for the team. Many sports do raffles to help raise money, and coaches may often go around into the community and ask for donations.
“If they want to buy equipment, if they want to feed their players, if they want to do any of those things, they can use that money for any of those types of things…” said Poore. “Those coaches went out, got donations from those different businesses, and then put signs up so that we can kind of identify who’s donated money.”

The donors/sponsors may not look for anything in return, but often times they will receive a sign or poster in the area of the program they donated to. Basketball received a new scoreboard in the gym, and the new scoreboard has sponsor logos around it. Football donors receive signs around the entrance and scoreboard, as well as announcements thanking them throughout the game.
Donations to the baseball and softball teams are shown appreciation by receiving signs in the outfield areas of the complex and they may also receive signs around the concession stand area.
While there are many donors and sponsors, donations are always welcomed and appreciated at CCHS. The many different programs show their appreciation in many different ways, and some programs use their donations to give back to the donors and community.
