Bryan Lee is the African American history teacher also one of teachers that was awarded
Teacher of the year 2022-23. He is also the coach of football and an active member in the community that constantly helps and tries to give back. Lee feels that every student should have a safe place where they feel that they belong in the senses of family no matter what your background is.
This class “serves a group of students that need to be served in a place like Carbondale. One of the things that makes Carbondale Community High School is the diversity.” Students from all over come here to Carbondale High School seeking new opportunity and acceptance. As a student of Carbondale community high school lots would say that Lee’s class is like a break from it all and the learning experience is fun and enjoyable.
When first presented with the opportunity of teaching this class Lee was apprehensive about teaching this curriculum but the teacher before him talked to him about the importance of this class for students and the overall awareness of the topics. And Lee feels that this story is one that is harsh but needs more recognition to know the struggles and historical hardships and struggles that happen.
Lee’s aspiration for his class to take weight off the shoulders of his students knowing the struggles of high school student life. But he also enlightens his student on the topics at hand and the atrocity and achievements accomplished throughout the past and years to come. Lee is an optimistic person always trying to get a laugh or a smile out of his students. This class is great that most students should take. AP African American history is in the works of being added to the curriculum.
