The Art Club has been a part of Carbondale Community High School since the first offerings of student run clubs. There has always been the option to work on your expression and enjoy the peaceful workplace of the art studio.

The CCHS Art Club meets every other wednesday at 3:00pm in room A100. The club is open to all students who want to join. The groups of students on Wednesdays are always kept small. Group sizes fluctuate and members are not required to attend meetings. Mrs. Kennedy, the sponsor of the club, said that “[Art Club] is a super relaxed environment where everyone works independently on different projects. We don’t all do the same thing, we don’t all have the same interests, and we usually just eat snacks, listen to music, and hang out while making art.”

Along with a nice selection of students, materials in the studio are free to use for all members of art club. Paint, paper, canvas, charcoal, pastels, and many other things are offered. Big tables and desks are used for easy clean-up and for an open workspaces for artists. The studio also has a row of large windows to let in natural light and many places to store your work once finished.

Students who already take an art or ceramics class can come in to work on projects for class. This is an opportunity to catch up on in-school projects or to step off the path and pursue your own work.

I have been a member of art club for the past four years and I have always enjoyed the openness of everything. I think that this characteristic is the best quality of the club. There is nothing that you need to follow or complete, it is all up to the individual to make their choice.

Mrs. Kennedy also said “If you’re not taking art it’s a way to get some exposure to art and see if that is maybe a class that you want to sign up for later. Also you can just come in and use the studio space if you’re not able to get into an art class.”

All students are welcome to join, whether you have little to no experience or a lot of experience in the arts. If interested, come in during any meeting and get to work!
