Mr. Zach Clark’s exterior carpentry students at Carbondale Community highschool are preparing a carpentry shed to be auctioned off next semester. This is a project that has taken place for many years here at CCHS. The auction will be online and heavily promoted through CCHS social media. The auction will consist of closed bids submitted to the CTE department. The winning bidder will be notified and once the money is exchanged, CCHS will deliver the shed to it’s new owner. All proceeds will be used to help with CTE student fees for the upcoming Skills USA competition in the spring.
Exterior carpentry is one of the many classes focused on developing skills that translate into work in the construction industry.
“Exterior carpentry is focused on the exterior of a building so its what they refer to as the shell, your exterior walls the roof components, and the floor components, everything that essentially makes the box or the shell or the house or building” said Clark
Students in the class were responsible for figuring out how the shed was to be constructed and who would be responsible for each task. Skills for a project this big go way beyond hammering some nails into pieces of wood.
“They do for certain portions they learn about measurements, especially in construction” Said Clark They use mathematics often so when building walls every student receives at least 1 stud which is the main frame member. They measure and cut that stud to length and you place all the studs on layout marks which students lay on the top and bottom plates and then they attach the nails to keep the studs in place so he assigns certain students that excel on their measurements quiz hell pair them up with other students who maybe didn’t do so well on a measurement quiz and they lay out where the studs go on the top and bottom plates and then the boards that they measured and cut for the studs those are the ones that fall out on those layout marks
The shed is still being built and there will be more info soon to come.
