Powderpuff is a long standing tradition here at CCHS, celebrated for almost over the past 15 years. This year’s powderpuff game will be played on Wednesday, October 15th, and it continues to be one of the biggest and most exciting events as we prepare for homecoming week. This fun and spirited event consists of only junior and senior students, with girls taking the field as flag football players and boys stepping into the role of cheerleaders. It’s a unique twist on the traditional way of football, and one that brings the student body together in a memorable and exciting way. And a great catch to all bringing in the school spirit.
This event is largely organized by Key Club, and serves as a fundraiser for the Kiwanis Neuroscience Research Foundation or KNRD. This organization supports medical research and fundraises for different districts across Southern Illinois, providing people with grants to study Neuroscience.
Powderpuff isn’t just about the money it raises, the game has helped girls build relationships and gives them an opportunity to be a part of a team, even if they aren’t normally a part of one. It’s definitely a competitive environment, but filled with a lot of fun and long lasting memories. Powderpuff was described as an engaging event by most girls competing and said it felt as though they were already “like a family”.
“The atmosphere is just more fun and engaging, we all play around and have a great time”, Senior, Highlie Drue, said.
As for the boys, they get to enjoy bringing energy to the game through their cheer routines. They help get the crowd engaged and get to support their classmates in a different, less serious way. Their outfits and high energy really help to keep the game alive. Their crafted routines are always sure to get people laughing and excited.
Whether you’re a part of the game or just cheering from the sidelines, Powderpuff is guaranteed to be a fun filled event promoting school spirit all around. Powderpuff not only helps raise money for a very beneficial cause, but provides students with long lasting memories that make the homecoming experience.
