Music Appreciation is a class through John A Logan College- according to the syllabus, “Music Appreciation is designed to familiarize the student with outstanding works of musical composition by means of recordings.” Students may join this class to understand music better, become educated on music terms, or to learn about music history. Luckily this class is a dual-credit course, meaning students can take it right here at CCHS! CCHS Teacher Katrina Wood hosts this class as an instructor during second hour.
“So it is kind-of like a survey of the history and styles of music uh- and we go through and learn about the different instruments- uhm. We learn about like the different elements of music and kind-of talk about how those apply to all the different time periods and then we get to do a little bit of film music a little bit of- uh like- world music and some Jazz and things like that- that kind-of have developed later on in music history.”
“I kind-of was told I was going to be teaching it which is okay! ‘cause it’s been on the books for a little while and hasn’t made before. It is a dual credit class which is cool and- uhm- for the music department the only one that we offer so that’s kind-of a neat thing and I’m actually really glad I got to teach it this year. When I was reading the text I was a little worried that it was going to be kind-of dry but it’s actually kind-of paced in a way that makes it pretty accessible- uhm. They give you a lot of materials that make it easy to get through study guides, and things like that, and the music examples they pick are really good to and I feel like because it’s a little bit shorter like class and the amount of stuff we have to go through is not super high- uhm- we get to do a little bit more of the stuff we like to listen to towards the end. Where like right now were watching the John Williams documentary we get to talk about film music, so!”
