Do you have a learning disability and find you need more help than the average student? You’re not alone and don’t worry!
Programs have been put in place to support students with learning disabilities. One of these programs is the 504 plan.
The 504 plan is derived from Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and according to the Department of Health and Human Services,
“Section 504 forbids organizations and employers from excluding or denying individuals with disabilities an equal opportunity to receive program benefits and services.”
High schools uphold the 504 plan but it does not always apply to college. The plan may offer employment opportunities before the end of high school to better prepare students financially for the next step of their lives.
Common accommodations made while in school and on the 504 plan include sitting in the hallway during tests, extended time on homework assignments, and exams being read out loud.
At Carbondale Community High School the 504 plan is instilled for students in need with various accommodations that can be made. Though within Carbondale Community High School the practice has its flaws,

“For me, it only works because I advocate for myself.” a Senior from Carbondale Community High School said.
Students on the 504 plan at Carbondale Community High School majorly have issues with the teacher’s application of the plan, or the lack of. When asked how that could improve,
“Read it and abide by it. Some teachers ignore it even though it’s very easy for teachers to access.” a Senior from Carbondale Community High School said.
“If teachers read it themselves and understand what it says- like understand how to put it into practice.” Senior Aodhan Anz from Carbondale Community High School said.
The 504 plan offers amazing opportunities for students in need, though at Carbondale Community High School as a student you may need to vocalize your plan to your teachers more often.
Teachers at Carbondale Community High School could improve by checking on struggling students’ accommodations and how to better apply them within their teaching.
