CCHS has many clubs and organizations; each club and organization fits for a different person because no one or two people are alike. From Black History Club, Art Club, and so much more, one of CCHS’s amazing organizations is their choir.
Choir at CCHS is one of the many organizations that make stars and help each student express themselves through singing and music; it varies from children expressing their passion for singing to just wanting to belong to a part of something that accepts you for you. Through choir, some students take that passion for singing and put it into other things, which leads to them getting amazing rewards and achievements as well as places in life.
Within the last few years, CCHS has won four or five awards for choir. The “Best of Day” awards at solo and ensemble and then also “First Rating” at organizational contests, and they are still making rising stars of the singers in the choir today. Choir has been at CCHS for years, and it will remain in years to come.
Katrina Wood, CCHS’s choir and band teacher, has been teaching choir or music of some sort for 8 years since 2017.
“ When I first started teaching, I really wanted to be a college band director. All of the jobs I did have always been band and choir. I have a soft spot for choir; it’s very empowering for young people to use their voices and ensembles. It was truly a surprise for me when I first started; it has now grown into one of my favorite things to do,” said Wood.
“ I really enjoy working with the choir and the students. I have a great time doing my job because I enjoy it very much,” said Wood.
Wood is very encouraging and sweet; she cares about her students and wants them to strive as young adults and be able to express themselves through music and their voices.
Two students found their light and shared their experiences through choir at CCHS. One of those students being Avani Brown. A freshman in high school, who has been a top leading student in the CCHS Choir, from singing in soprano and alto to expressing her voice through music in solo and ensemble. She has been singing since elementary and loved every moment of it.
“ I love finding bonds anywhere I go, and the choir does just that,” said Brown.
It may be bonds through new experiences or just bonds among your choir family; either way, choir helps Brown tighten those bonds.
“ It brings me joy and keeps my mind off things,” said Brown.
Josie Todd, also a freshman at CCHS, had a few things to say about her choir experience throughout the years.
” I have been in choir for 4 whole years,” said Todd
“ I love being in choir because I get to make music for other people and do one of my favorite things, which is singing,” said Todd.
“ I’ve always loved singing, and I wanted to improve music reading and my skill as an individual,” said Todd.
Carbondale Community High School is full of people with different talents and gifts, each student strives to show who they are in choir and what they represent at CCHS in many other ways.
