The wrestlers of CCHS put in a lot of hard work being the best they can be. The terrier wrestling team consists of three female wrestlers compared to fourteen male wrestlers. The wrestling team is broken into weight classes and wrestlers have to work their way up to be able to compete against each other to get a spot in each weight class. The team record for this year was 15-6 with only one girl making it to state. Tyshawn Welch has worked his way up by competing in these weight classes and earned his spot on the wrestling team.
Tyshawn Welch said he heard about wrestling and wanted to try it. At first it was hard for him but over time it became easier. He didn’t know if he wanted to do it at first he said his coach told him to keep coming to the practices and from there he got better at the drills.
Students who are scared of wrestling tend to not even try or put in the work Tyshawn says “Wrestling helps you with life and helps you not give up.” The wrestling season starts in November every year. The way he prepares for the season is working out, lifting weights, and doing wrestling drills with his coach. The work needed for this sport is very challenging to accomplish having to cut or gain weight. Tyshawn says “ To gain weight he eats the right foods like lean chicken and vegetables and to cut weight he doesn’t eat at all.” He said yes it is a challenge because he gets hungry when cutting weight but when gaining weight it is much easier.
There are plenty of kids out there wanting to do wrestling and there is no reason to be scared. Tyshawn says most kids don’t enter because they don’t want to put in the work and because they are scared. He started off not knowing how it would turn out but he said him being consistent starting in 2024 and now he is good at what he does. The coach of the wrestling team says that kids boys and girls don’t join the team because it is a challenging sport and takes a lot of muscle. He said you need to be tough and your body has to be in healthy shape. The advice he gives to kids scared of joining the wrestling team is to just give it a try and don’t expect to be really good the first year. Focus on learning the sport and once you wrestled everything in life becomes easier.
