With school enrollment rising, we continue to see more interest in our high school’s CTE department. Within that department, we find our general trades teacher Mr. Clarks’ Exterior Carpentry Class. Within the class, you’re essentially learning everything involved with building a house. From the very beginning with the foundation, all the way up to the roof, students will learn some concrete fundamentals, along with many things involving framing.
Like any of the other CTE classes, Exterior Carpentry is very hands-on, having labs everyday, which ultimately provides students real life experience and more engagement. I asked Landyn Duty if he foresees himself doing more carpentry after taking the class: “I think so, yeah. I think I want to do something with carpentry and stuff like that, yeah.”
I also asked if he thought Mr Clark was a good instructor: “Yeah, he’s got a lot of experience and I feel like he’s a good teacher when it comes to teaching stuff. Like, you know, he does welding and, small engines and stuff like that, so.
Upon taking the class, you will also complete the OSHA ten hour course and then will receive the ten hour card, which is a great thing to have when out in the workforce. Some employers don’t require it, but many will, so having that card will put you ahead of the game in some cases. For any questions about the class, or CTE programs, you can ask Mr. Clark or Mr. Terry.
