The CCHS Theater Department is currently preparing to perform what may be one of the most magical and ambitious shows from the group yet. Written by Brian Cox and directed by Branden Cummins, the play titled Puffs is an all new perspective on the classic Harry Potter novels written by J.K Rowling. The play aims to summarize all seven books, but takes its focus onto the lesser known students of the wizarding school, as well as go towards a more humorous approach by having plenty of jokes regarding its source material.
CCHS plays have been known to always keep students guessing as to what exactly the show will be, as fall plays typically aim to be much different from the past year’s performance. Just last year the theater department put on The Murder Mystery at the Murder Mystery, a comedy mystery about stage actors having to solve an actual murder in their story. The required amount of characters needed was relatively small in comparison to the fantasy adventure of Puffs, which has a total character count of nearly 50, meaning the cast will be performing multiple roles throughout the show.
When discussing the task at hand of enlisting enough cast members for the large list of characters, Mr. Cummins replied, “When it came down to selecting the roles, it was just about who brought out the most energy. The show is big, from the lines to the story and even the characters, I needed to have people that would bring that big energy.”
With a large amount of characters needed, CCHS students of both seasoned participants and newcomers have all come together to give audiences plenty of laughs, drama, and heart. Lead star Conner Gulbrandsen, a junior who has done plenty of theater work during his time at CCHS, gives his thoughts on the grand scope of the show. “I personally have enjoyed the shows that are more ensemble based, and I always love it when everything comes together, which usually does.”
Puffs is set to premiere at the CCHS auditorium on October 18th at 7 p.m., with an additional show date the following day at the same time.
