Carbondale Community High School celebrated their senior boys basketball members on February 19th while playing Mt Vernon at CCHS. Senior night is typically the last home game for every single sport. It is a time to recognize the seniors and their families for their time and dedication to the sport. This was a time for the boys to put it all on the court and play like their lives depended on it. The gymnasium was filled with people from the community who wanted to come out and cheer on their hard working athletes.
The game began with the players being recognized in this heartfelt moment. As each player was announced, the crowd erupted in applause, showing their appreciation towards these student athletes. Followed by the national anthem, Carbondale was able to win the tip off against Mt Vernon. The atmosphere was intense, with fans, friends, and family members cheering in the stands. People that came out wore team colors to show their support.
By halftime the game was tied, 22-22, making it anyone’s game. Also, during halftime, they took time to honor the National Guard and its members for their service.
By the end of the game, the score was 48-53; Mt Vernon had defeated the Terriers. Despite the defeat, DeCarl Payne played one of his best games of all time. He broke the CCHS All Time 3-Point shot record, scoring 194 3-point shots during his CCHS basketball career. The school is eager to see where his future takes him, hopefully playing basketball at the next level.
When DeCarl was asked how he prepared for the game, he responded, “My other years helped me prepare for senior night by just showing me what things you should take from each game before my time came, such as not to go in the game not locked in and just cherishing the moment.”
Congratulations to all the Senior athletes, Your CCHS family wishes you well on the next chapter of your lives
