Homework is a hot topic; people have different views and opinions on homework and it is debatable. With that, homework has been a thing for years. In 1905, Roberto Nevelis came up with an idea that students that were so called “bad” or didn’t participate in the daily lessons of school work should then be punished for doing so and would then be assigned homework. This idea spread throughout Europe before it reached America.
In the 1950’s and 60’s homework loads began to increase. Homework was more common in the U.S. at this time. Now, 2023, people can do homework online, virtually or in person. Students have mixed emotions about this hot topic and some agree with homework, others disagree. Who invented homework and how was it invented?
Justin Clark attends Carbondale Community High School located in Carbondale IL.
Justin Clark is a sophomore of CCHS as of October, 2023. Clark thinks we shouldn’t have homework after school. When asked “Should students have homework or no homework after school? And why?” Clark answered “No homework, we’re in school 7-8 hours on weekdays and some of us don’t have time to do homework afterschool because we work… Sometimes, we need a break.” This is a valid reasoning as to why kids shouldn’t have homework afterschool.
Chase McVicker is a Senior of CCHS as of October, 2023. McVicker thinks having homework and working afterschool is a problem. When asked “If you have a job and you’re a highschool student, how does the homework load affect the student’s capabilities?” McVicker answered “I think it’s a problem. Sometimes, if I go to work right after school, I get home and I am really tired and at times; I am not able to get homework done because of that.” This is another example, as to why homework should be limited or there shouldn’t be any. Kids have responsibilities and it can be hard to get homework done after school.
These are all valid reasons as to why homework should be stopped. Where do you stand with homework? Do you think it’s necessary? People gave their opinions on homework and it still remains a hot topic and a constant debate. In other words, you’re entitled to your own opinion. Keep it that way. And if homework still exists when you’re reading this, try your best to do it because if not it can affect your grades.
