Inktober is well known event… at least, in the artist community. Other than that, next to no one understands what this event is. Image result for who started inktober

Inktober is an artist’s event that has been going on for the last ten years. The event takes up the duration of October and is aimed towards practicing with ink. Each day, a prompt is given for the participating artists. They then create an original drawing, pulling from the suggested word or phrase, and begin to “ink in” their creation.

It started with Jake Parker in 2009. His reasons behind the creation of Inktober were to help him and others to practice their inking skills, as well as to promote healthy drawing habits. The prompts lend to a creative mind set, as each drawing created is imagined by each individual artist. No two drawing are alike.

Although thousands of artists participate in this event, posting and tagging their art for each prompt, many find it much harder to create a drawing every single day. These people however, are no less in the grand scheme of things. Even though the event is also a challenge, the main focus is not to create half-loved art: the point is to make something that helps you practice, learn, and keep creating. The prompts for Inktober also try to remain in the realm of spooky season, meaning that they focus on the Halloween spirit. Many prompts also give a graceful nod to “Goretober” which focuses on the even spookier and bloodier aspects that are brought out in October. The prompts remain incredibly vague however, in order to give the artist maximum creative liberties. Even though there is one master list for the event, many artist take their own initiative to create a list and share it on social media.

Inktober is for anyone with access to paper and a pen. Artists from every discipline and level contribute art. Some color their art, others sketch it in pencil then ink it, some even take on the daunting responsibility of only making a picture in unforgiving ink. Whatever method these artist use, they have the chance to show off their creativity and skill, as well as have a fun time and get in the Halloween season.
