  • Always be ready for any type of weather. Bring sunglasses, rain gear, hat, sunscreen, and proper layering in cold weather. Last year, while fishing in a tournament, out of nowhere a big rain storm came through. I planned ahead wearing warm clothes and always packing my rain gear and water shoes with me just in case.

  • Be soft when landing or pitching baits. Splashing or loud hits on the water may scare fish away. I’ve had personal experiences with this. While fishing I threw a bait on top of a fish I saw and it made a loud splash, causing the fish to swim away.

  • When fishing with a partner, always keep the boat parallel with the shore. Doing this allows both partners to be the same distance from the shore.

  • Make sure to always check weather and pre fish before the actual tournament. Doing this will allow you to find out what the fish are biting on and what spots they’re at. Use GPS and landmarks to help with marking areas where laydowns.

  • Consider timing. Timing plays a big role in where to be fishing at. In mornings, troll banks. When the sun is up you want to find laydowns or brush piles. On warm weather morning and evenings throw top water and during mid-day stick to shaded area’s such as laydowns and docks.
