Jalen Chaundy, Writer

We all have those mornings where just nothing seems to go right. Mornings where we feel like we can’t physically lift ourselves out of bed. However, there are plenty of benefits to waking up earlier.

Although it may sound crazy, research finds that waking up earlier helps overall mental health and causes you to have a happier outlook on life long-term. So, here’s five reasons why you should start setting your alarms for six a.m.

  • More Productivity

By waking up earlier than everybody else, you give yourself a kick-start for the day. Overall, you are more energized and motivated to carry out tasks and goals that you have in your schedule. Studies have suggested that when a person gets up early, they are more energetic and take less time to do a task that would take more time otherwise. They are also more adept in making better decisions and planning.

  • Mental Fitness

Allowing your brain a longer time to wake up and mentally prepare, you put less stress on your brain. This decreases your stress levels and starts your day off on a positive note. Allowing your brain to have time in order to “warm up” will provide you with a better morning.

  • Better Sleep at Night

Obviously waking up earlier in the morning will cause you to go to bed earlier at night, giving you the opportunity to get a good night’s rest with little distraction. Getting up early is not something that should be followed irregularly but it needs to be established as a routine in your life. This translates into better sleep quality as your body’s internal clock adapts to your new sleep routine.

  • Better Test Scores

A research conducted by Texas University found that those who woke up between 5 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. had an increase of test scores by nearly 5.5%. This can help you better your GPA, take in more knowledge in school and provide less stress. One can link it to a better productivity and better sleep quality.

  • Better Environment

Getting up early increases your positivity and helps build courage. Most people who wake up earlier aren’t just happy for the duration of the day, instead they are happier for a longer duration of life. You will have a happier outlook on the world and the environment.

I hope you can take these tips and apply it to your own life and help improve your overall mental stamina. Take care of your body and your brain and provide it with an adequate amount of sleep and relaxation. Your brain is the powerhouse of your body, make sure it is well kept.
