Mario Party is back on top with its newest release, Super Mario Party. Bringing the party game franchise back to its roots of a free for all board game style multiplayer, gameplay driven experience that contrasts greatly to the weird all together ways of the past two entries. This word driven explanation is quite confusing to those unfamiliar with the material so included here are some videos showing the differences between the two styles.

As you can see in the above link, showcasing the gameplay of 2015’s Mario Party 10, players would move across the board together in a train style car, only playing minigames when landing on Miningame spaces.

This video shows Super Mario Party gameplay, showing that now characters go back to moving by themselves and mini games are played after every turn, both of these make Mario Party both more strategic and fun to play.

That brings us to today’s countdown the top five mini games in Super Mario Party!

  1. Candy Shakedown

What you will hear a lot about items 5-2 here is that the motion controls featured in the Nintendo Switch Joy Con are astounding. It may just look like shaking a jar in the video, but when you actually play it, you can feel every individual piece of candy rattling around inside the controller, and it feels amazing. When all of your friends are huddled around the room, shaking and convulsing uncontrollably, you really see why this game is so fun.

  1. Look Sharp

In this minigame, the player has to alter the angle of the controller to focus on the character on the screen, again done through motion controls. There is a slight rumbling in the controller that increases the closer you get to the focus point, letting the player know very easily that they are on the right track. Everyone goes crazy playing this game as it just goes very quickly, it’s a mad dash to the end, and when the entire party is getting into it, this game is a blast

  1. Sizzling Stakes

This game features the coolest implementation of the Joy Con in any game. The player uses the controller as a pan while cooking a small steak cube, flipping it to every side to ensure an even cook. The Joy Con rumbles once a side is fully cooked and gives a little kick with every toss and catch of the meat. Seeing everyone flail their arms around the room, as well as the massive insults being shouted across the room really bring out the best in this game.

  1. Trike Harder

In this minigame, players rotate the Joy Con on both ends mimicking the motion of pedaling a tricycle, again the motion controls here are fantastic. There is a slight rumbling in the controller once you hit the top speed that feels great and makes sure the player knows what they are doing is correct in a very natural way.

  1. Slaparazzi

This is the only game featured on the list that does not utilize the Joy Con motion controls, opting for a more traditional controller option. In this game, players move their character around the screen trying to position themselves in front of the incoming camera man, while punching opponents out of the way. This game really captures the essence of Mario Party as it really brings out the competitiveness of everyone in the game and is some of the most fun I’ve ever had.
