Animal House Revisited

Animal House Revisited

With Homecoming week here, and I being a senior, I decided to get in to the senior spirit and investigate into some prominent senior movies, which lead me to a blast from the past: National Lampoon’s Animal House. No, this isn’t an animal planet show, it’s a cult classic following the seniors of Faber College in two fraternities.

The movie was jam-packed with and amazing cast and crew. Be it from director John Landis, to the many amazing actors, writers like Doug Kenny, Jim Belushi, Kevin Bacon, and many more great names. The movie came out in July 28, 1978 and is rated R. It was a box office hit, making over 141.6 million, which was 47% increase of their budget of 3 million.

The plot of the movie follows two frats, the Deltas, the fun crazy house and the Omegas, the preppy rich kids. It starts with two freshmen named Larry Kroger and Kent Dorfman during rush night. They visit the Omega’s house. There, they get ridiculed and confined to a small side room, until they decide to leave for the Delta’s house party. There they are met with a wild and crazy party, where they meet other main character “Bluto,” the frats party animal, “Otter” the ladies man and rush chairmen, and many more colorful characters.

Later, the Deltas accept the two boys into the frat. While on the other side of the college the dean of student Vernon Wormer is tired of the Delta’s shenanigans and disruptions to his school, and plots with the Omegas to get rid of the Deltas. The Deltas become aware of the overwhelming hatred, and do their best to continue their lifestyle and stay at  Faber College. As a response chaos ensues in wacky shenanigans.

I’d give the movie a ten out of ten. The movie had a cast and crew that was phenomenal. Jim Belushi’s character was so dynamic leaving the audience always wonder what he would do next, be it a food fight or swinging off a banner. Paired next to faces the likes of Donald Sutherland and the amazing composing of Elmer Bernstein, the movie leaves you wanting more. It’s an overall smash.
